The archetypal giant spider is found in "The Hobbit" by J.R.R.Tolkein, save that in OSRIC, these creatures cannot talk.

The bite of a giant spider is poisonous. Any creature bitten by a giant spider must save vs poison or die. In practise, the creature failing its saving throw falls to the ground unconscious for 1d6 hours before it actually, and during this time a slow poison spell will revive it temporarily or a neutralise poison will revive it permanently. Raise dead will not work unless the poison is somehow extracted from the creature's system first.

Unlike normal spider webs, giant spider webs are quite inflammable.

Variants:

There are also Large and Huge spiders (HD 1+1 and 2+2 respectively), which are smaller and non-intelligent; saving throws against poison are made at +2 and +1 respectively. Huge spiders typically do not build webs but move much faster (150ft per round) and can sometimes jump up to 30ft, surprising opponents on a 1 to 5 on 1d6.

Several other spider variants exist, including the feared Phase Spider, but these are encountered more rarely.
